A recent study conducted with a large group of 21,000 men and women across the U.S. aimed to explore the potential benefits of daily cocoa extract and multivitamin mineral supplements. Researchers wanted to determine if these supplements could reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other health issues. Additionally, they investigated whether these supplements could improve cognition in older adults.
The study involved 2,200 participants aged 65 or older who completed memory and cognitive skill tests over the phone at the beginning and annually. Interestingly, while cocoa extract did not impact cognition, the daily administration of a multivitamin-mineral supplement led to statistically significant cognitive improvement. Dr. Baker from Wake Forest University School of Medicine commented, “This is the first evidence of cognitive benefit in a large, long-term study of multivitamin supplementation in older adults.”
The research team estimated that three years of multivitamin supplementation could potentially slow cognitive decline by around 60%, equivalent to maintaining mental capacity for an additional 1.8 years. Notably, the benefits were more pronounced in participants with “significant” cardiovascular disease, a crucial finding as they are already at higher risk for cognitive impairment and decline.
By incorporating a daily multivitamin into their routine, seniors can potentially support their mental sharpness and protect against dementia. Embracing the power of multivitamins can make a significant difference in maintaining cognitive health, particularly for those with existing cardiovascular concerns. Take charge of your mind and give it the essential nutrients it needs for a vibrant and sharp future.
